A new beginning. A fresh start.

Have you ever thought or been in a situation when you are about starting something all over again? From the beginning? Starting afresh? It’s like learning to walk like a baby, it takes time, practice, failure, commitment, and dedication.

Many times, starting all over again might seem difficult. Challenging. It’s a new beginning. Sometimes we need to start all over again to get it right. Doing something all over again.

Why do we need to start afresh in some situations? Why do we need to start from the beginning? To work on our foundation.

The need to start afresh may occur due to a rocky foundation. The foundation needs to be removed, and a new seed planted. The root needs to be uprooted, so that a new seed can grow. Look at it from the perspective of a tree, if you plant a tree in a bad soil, it will not germinate to a good result, so is your life.

Here’s a beautiful example of a noble Prophet about starting afresh. He demonstrated a fresh start and how we can apply that in our lives as well.

Looking at the life of Prophet Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ. A prophet from the Ulul-Azimm. He demonstrated a fresh start when he left Egypt and relocated to Midian. He left due to an unhappy incident, an unintended mistake. (He mistakenly killed a Man, sought forgiveness from Allaah. He was informed that he was going to be killed and left Egypt) This was a Prophet that was enjoying life of affluence in Egypt. He was living as an adopted child of Pharaoh.

He decided to leave Egypt. And went towards the land of Midian. On his way he supplicated for guidance. When he got to Midian he rendered help to two sisters and made a powerful supplication:

“My Lord! Truly, I am in need of whatever good that You bestow on me!”  Qur’an 28:24

Qur’an 28:24

The dua He made is very powerful. This is a dua you should he making for times when you know you need help from Allaah ﷻ  but you can’t pin-point at what you want. You have A Rabb that knows what you need and He will give it to You at the right time!

21. So he escaped from there, looking about in a state of fear. He said: “My Lord! Save me from the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers)!”

22. And when he went towards (the land of) Madyan (Midian) he said: “It may be that my Lord guides me to the Right Way.”

23. And when he arrived at the water of Madyan (Midian) he found there a group of men watering (their flocks), and besides them he found two women who were keeping back (their flocks). He said: “What is the matter with you?” They said: “We cannot water (our flocks) until the shepherds take (their flocks). And our father is a very old man.”

24. So he watered (their flocks) for them, then he turned back to shade, and said: “My Lord! Truly, I am in need of whatever good that You bestow on me!” Qur’an 28: 21-24

Back to the story…

He moved to a different environment to have a fresh start. He supplicated as he was moving, and Almighty Allaah ﷻ helped Him.

While he was in Midiyan, he worked with Prophet Suhaib عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, got married and started a family. He gave up a lot to be in Midiyan. He let go and was out of his comfort zone, to an unknown land… But He had Allaah ﷻ with him. He trusted His Rabb. With this Almighty Allah ﷻ raised his rank to be a Prophet. To get to this noble rank, he had to leave his (Egypt) environment, to a new place and start life all over again. He let go and sacrificed.

Reflecting upon his story… we can say Almighty Allaah ﷻ saw…

The sincerity in his intention.

He was very remorseful for the mistake he committed.

He was humble and submissive.

He was Ready to turn a new leaf.

You can also follow his example and start a new beginning in an area of your life. No matter your situation/circumstance.

Starting all over again on a clean slate. This is enjoined upon us by Almighty Allaah ﷻ that we should seek forgiveness to be clean. To be pure. To be purified of our sins.

Is it about learning about yourself from the beginning? Learning about your deen from the beginning? Learning about businesses all over again. Making your friends? Starting afresh. Going back to the drawing board. And recommitting to starting from the beginning.

Another beauty of starting fresh is that you are much wiser. So, whenever you commit a sin and you seek forgiveness you are on a clean slate. We see this in the Quran where Almighty Allaah ﷻ tells us He will forgive you of your sins… “(Say: “O ‘Ibadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Qur’an 39: 53)

So, whenever you commit something wrong and you repent you become NEW. So, I invite you to look at yourself and around you…

What do you need to start afresh from? …

To nurture yourself from the beginning? …

To look after your health? …

Do you need to recommit to learning the deen? …

Recommit to look at your life… pick something that you will start afresh. From the beginning.

Sometimes your starting afresh can simply mean working on your sincerity.

Working on your intentions and level of sincerity – making it pure for Allah’s sake

Is there something you are working, and you have been doing before with a shaky intention, then recommit to that and setting lofty goals. To having lofty aspirations. To having noble intentions. To living a life of fisabilillah.
